Toktogul, in Pictures – Part Two

LakeLake1Lake2

Lake3At the bottom of this lake lies Old Toktogul, flooded by the Soviets in 1976 when they built a hydroelectric dam on the Naryn River and the largest electrical plant in Kyrgyzstan. When we visited Toktogul, we met people who described growing up there, and now their childhood is hidden in the depths of the lake. Toktogul has since been moved a few kilometers down the valley and the lake, despite being called “dirty and unsafe” by the locals, is pretty damn beautiful. (It’s also a pretty sweet spot for a picnic.)
